Baseball fans plan to boycott Gatorade over soccer ad
This post is the single most popular post in the short history of ThroughBall.com. In it, we reviewed the comments made by a baseball fan calling himself “lendog.” For the record, I suspect he may also respond to “lenster” or “the lenmeister.”
“lendog” was not happy with the Gatorade commercial that featured the U.S. Men’s National Team and the popular baseball song, “Take me Out to the Ballgame.” “lendog” called soccer “a thinly-veiled romper room” and made himself look foolish by saying that soccer is a game “where you can’t look foolish!!!”
All of that is a long introduction to a short question: What are the chances that our friend lendog is involved in the petition to boycott Gatorade for running the aforementioned advertisement? Among the more comments are:
The bigoted/latent tendencies approach: “I support this petition because Those friggin[sic] fruits should get Boy George towrite[sic] their own anthem for their faggy sport.”
The political approach: “I support this petition because only communists plays[sic] soccer.”
The succint approach: “I support this petition because soccer should get thire[sic] own song.”
You’d think that I’d have something World Cup-related to write about, seeing as the tournament begins today. You’d think.

I like that they call Major League Baseball “a national sponsor of Gatorade.”
Hmm.
Well, sure. That’s how it works, isn’t it? Gatorade needs to make money somehow. What would they do if MLB didn’t give them some money?

Whine whine whine. Just because Gatorade used their song to make a great commercial. Some people have way too much time on their hands and need to find somethign better to do. Like watch the World Cup!!!!
I’ve never understood the infatuation with baseball. Its like watching paint dry until someone happens to actually hit the ball. I hated playing it and loathe watching it. I think baseball fans are nervous that their boring sport, national pasttime or not, may eventually be grouped with golf in terms of excitment while action sports like basketball, NASCAR, and soccer continue to gain viewers, with soccer having the most to gain.
I sat next a woman on the plane from Chicago to Cleveland for the USA v. Venezuela match that works in marketing for Gatorade. She told me some pretty funny stories about the irate baseball fans and some of the hate mail they had received over the ad.
OK, right now I feel a little better because Drogba just scored for Cote d’Ivoire. But a few seconds ago I was trying some relaxation techniques, breathing deeply and trying not to get down on myself for going to that petition link that you posted. I shouldn’t have gone there because I knew what I would find. I knew that it would remind me of the vast population of ignorant know-nothings (oh, I guess that’s redundant but it feels good to write it), who, frighteningly, can also obtain driver’s licenses and have voting rights.
Let’s Check In On Our Baseball Boneheads…
Some baseball fans want to boycott Gatorade over the ‘Whole new Ballgame’ ad. Lets see how they’re doing…….
[...] Lets see how our baseball friends are doing in their efforts to boycott Gatorade. Josh over at ThroughBall first alerted us to the ire of a few US baseball fans who felt it was insulting for Gatorade to use baseball’s anthem in their recent soccer commercials. In addition to asking fans to boycott Gatorade’s products, they started a petition. [...]
Whoops – sorry bout the double trackback. WordPress was acting weird when I first upgraded – have it all worked out now.

Man, it just doesn’t seem hate-mail-worthy, you know?
Ignorant bastards. If they ever tried football(that’s what it’s really called) they’d understand why they’re the only spazzers who play baseball…
