Jorge Larrionda’s fifteen minutes

“Referee” Jorge Larrionda rightfully faced a lot of criticism after his abysmal performance in the Italy v U.S. match. And even if Jorge never referees again (again), he has achieved true fame by way of a recently-updated wikipedia entry.

Here’s to Jorge and hoping he never works again.

Bruce Arena is correct. The officiating has been so tight in some of these games that the ref. is becoming the most important man on the field, not the players. This is not a good thing and has really killed the flow of a few of these games.

Kezman’s red on Friday was very similar to Mastroni’s Red. He came in with two feet but was certainly going for ball and not to injure. Straight Red?

Then yesterday, after the S. Korean keeper bobbled a save and pounced on it again the defender tried to shield Zidane. Zidane gave him a minor bump from behind. The S. Korean took a big dive and the ref. pulled out a yellow. There was no reason he needed to yellow Zidane and now we may have seen him play his last game as this was his second yellow and will not be allowed to play in France’s third game.

What is happening at this World Cup is just a shame.

FIFA Feels Card Happy Refs Are Justified…

FIFA is cracking down on reckless play with a flood of yellow and red cards. Is it necessary?

I got a kick out of how they locked his WikiPedia entry the day after the match because fans went crazy with it. Look at the history - heh. Looks like they’ve opened it up again though.

Look at the history

Beware of maniacal soccer fans/wikipedia updaters.

[...] In a stroke of bad luck, the U.S. team was victimized by awful refereeing during the 2006 World Cup. Conversely, Arena’s side experienced a good deal of fantastic luck in the 2002 World Cup. During that tournament, opponents took the U.S. side for granted and the U.S. advanced to the quarterfinals. Bruce Arena successfully exploited that good fortune and rode it all the way into the 2006 tournament, all the while giving the impression that he belonged. [...]

Jorge did a great job in the USA and ITALY game, that’s why he officiated the France and Portugal SEMI-FINAL match. So much you all know about officiating soccer.
