What Reading needs is more Americans
Freddy Adu might be headed to Reading on loan from D.C. United, with a permanent deal forthcoming next year.
While he is clearly talented, I’ve never been convinced that Adu is anything more than an overhyped, pie-in-the-sky, “Future of American Soccer” pipe dream. As such, a stint in the Premiership would be a perfect time to find out if he’s the real deal.
What do you think? Is this a good deal for Adu? For Reading? For U.S. Soccer?

Reading already has a good left-footed winger, Bobby Convey.
I’d say good deal for Adu, because if he does end up sucking he can always pull a Landon Donovan and just say that he didn’t like the culture in England and all the other things Donovan whines about when people ask him why he couldn’t hack it in Germany.
Long overdue. He should have signed with a Prem team when he was 14, to take advantage of their superior training infrastructure.
He may not make an immediate impact with Reading, but at least we’ll be able to find out what he’s really made of when pitted against the world’s best.

Not to be a downer, but I’m afraid I know the answer…
I hope Three Lions isn’t suggesting that the soccer retirement league (aka MLS) doesn’t have the best past-their-prime players in the world.
So Freddy has shown to be an adequate player against the over 35-ers, I’m just not sure how he’s going to handle the talent of all the at-their-peak or peaking players in England.
He’ll probably play one game, and then spend the rest of his time in the reserves. Then he’ll pull a Donovan.
