Profiles in potential: Frank Yallop

In a post last week, I listed eight potential coaches for the U.S. Men’s National Team (as determined by Grant Wahl). The following is the first post in a series of biographical sketches—cleverly entitled, “Profiles in potential” (sorry, President Kennedy)—focusing on each of these prospective managers.

yallop.gifThe first candidate is Frank Yallop.

Age: 46

Where he’s from: England and Canada

What he does now: Coaches the Los Angeles Galaxy

What he did then: Yallop played as a defender for clubs Ipswitch Town (England), Blackpool (England) and the now-defunct Tampa Bay Mutiny (U.S.). He was capped 52 times while playing for the Canadian National Team.

Yallop coached the Nike Project 40 team and the San Jose Earthquakes (he was named the MLS Coach of the Year in 2001) before taking the reins of the Canadian National Team in 2004. He resigned from that position in 2006 when he was named the head coach of the Galaxy.

Absurdly unofficial odds that he will get the job: 1,000 to 1

[...] According to the L.A. Times, Frank Yallop does not want to coach the U.S. Men’s National Team. “It’s pure speculation,” Yallop said Wednesday at the Home Depot Center. “There’s a list of people who I guess always get mentioned and I feel pretty flattered that I get put into that mix. It means I’m doing something right in my coaching career. [...]
