Profiles in potential: Peter Nowak

Recently, I listed eight potential coaches for the U.S. Men’s National Team (as determined by Grant Wahl). The following is the third post in a series of biographical sketches—cleverly entitled, “Profiles in potential“—focusing on each of these prospective managers.

nowak.jpgThe third candidate is Peter (Piotr) Nowak.

Age: 42

Where he’s from: Poland

What he does now: Manages D.C. United

What he did then: Nowak played for clubs in Poland, Turkey, and Switzerland during the 1980s and ’90s. He played for FC Kaiserslautern (Germany) and 1860 Munich (Germany) from 1994 until 1998 when he joined the Chicago Fire (U.S.). Nowak led the Fire to one MLS Cup and two U.S. Open Cups.

Nowak was awarded 24 caps playing for the Polish National Team.

Nowak retired from playing in 2002. In 2004, he took over as manager of D.C. United, leading the team to victory in the the MLS Cup. In 2006, D.C. United won the Supporters Shield.

Absurdly unofficial odds that he will get the job: 29 to 1

Depending on whether or not Klinsman wants the gig, I tend to think that Nowak must be second or third on the list…

Funny guy.

For some reason, it just didn’t seem kosher to add an opinion to that post.
