The pictures of racism
You cannot look at the following picture and read its caption without being supremely disappointed in humanity.

Inter Milan’s Adriano and Messina’s Marco Andre Zoro appeal to traveling Inter fans during their match in Sicily after repeated taunts and monkey chants. Zoro, from the Ivory Coast, was reduced to tears and nearly left the field.
I encourage you to see the rest of the slideshow here. While the incident described above happened earlier this year, this sort of thing is happening far too often lately.

These pictures remind me that I could fill several encyclopedias with stuff that I just don’t understand about the world. I always thought that sport helped to improve racial attitudes and bring people together. Why do these people want to treat their own players so cruelly? It must be because they are low on the socioeconomic totem pole themselves and feel the need to mock others, right? (I had a sociology class once, can you tell)? I do know someone (no blood relation to me, if you know what I mean), who is very racist and uses racist language, but he would never dare to behave like this in public. I am sure that there are many others like him here in America. Why is public behavior like that tolerated in Europe? I’m not saying our racial scorecard is better, it’s just different. Maybe it is better, as there are plenty of people who’ve at least tried to rectify past wrongs. Whatever…
This goes in the same category as options theory and topology: I just don’t get it.
I seem to recall reading in some soccer-is-the-greatest writings that soccer is much more a part of life in foreign countries than any sport is in the America. Americans obsess over their sports, they said, but it’s not as much a part of the social fabric and national identity as it is in most other countries.
If this is the case, could it be that these other countries have pockets of racists just as America does, but whereas American racists express their (stupid) views by committing hate crimes and holding public rallies, racists in some other countries express their (moronic) views by going to soccer games and taunting players (besides other ways, I’m sure)? Could it be that whereas in America sports are sports and the only dividing lines are team loyalties, in other countries soccer is life and just another public venue for some groups to demonstrate their (idiotic) views?
I have no idea, of course, but it’s a thought.
Well, it looks like the race for Resident Sociologist just got interesting…
I encourage you to sling mud as soon as possible.
It seems to me that Football’s methods of fighting racism are about as toothless as the UN’s efforts to keep the peace in war torn regions of the world. Hearings and banners don’t do very much when you have groups of neo nazis proudly displaying their opinions that completely go against what FIFA has sworn to stamp out. The Spaniards and the Italians seem particularly uneffective at controlling this behaviour. I remember in the good old days (80s) when the Italians were obsessed with communism. Looks like they’ve got different ideals in 06. I don’t think we’ll see too much success on this front in the near future.

Just given the percentages, I wouldn’t have guessed seeing this in the NBA. Sad.
Update: The NBA fan has apologized for his racist heckling. Huh. That was unexpected.
So, just when you thought this only happened in Europe.
