Buzz Lagos was a good coach

Buzz Lagos was fooled. The former Minnesota Thunder soccer coach thought he was going to St. Louis to accept an award Saturday evening for coaching longevity with the Thunder. In reality, he was being honored with the Ron Wigg Award for outstanding coaching contributions in Region II, which covers a 13-state area. Those closest to him wanted it to be a surprise, and it was, up until the last possible moment.

“They gave out awards, and they started talking about this coach, describing him. Then they mentioned he had sons who played soccer at a high level,” Lagos said Sunday after returning to St. Paul. “I thought, ‘That’s me.’ But it wasn’t until then that I realized it.”
