Video: Drew Carey talks soccer with David Letterman
Drew Carey was on The Late Show with David Letterman two nights ago to discuss his role as the new host of The Price Is Right. When Letterman asked him a question about sports, Carey launched into soccer ambassador mode and didn’t let up for an enjoyable four and a half minutes:
Two things about this clip:
1) MLS and U.S. Soccer couldn’t buy advertising this good; the best part is that he really is a soccer devotee. You know how connoisseurs of the beautiful game talk about the it with a gleam in their eye? How we walk the fine line between love and obsession; between passion and insanity? That’s what Drew Carey has: that undefinable something that happens the first time you watch the game and, suddenly, you get it.
2) Interviews like this, where a celebrity appears on a show like The Late Show or The Tonight Show, are often scripted affairs. The guest—or the guest’s “people”—provide a list of topics or questions for the host to use when interviewing the guest. This means that 1) Carey went off-script or 2) soccer was built in to the list of topics. If the former is true, it is proof that Carey is a true believer. If the latter, Carey used valuable career-building time to promote the game. Either way, soccer in this country has a great asset in Drew Carey.
By the way, the AP is reporting that “Carey, an avid fan of the L.A. Galaxy soccer team and new star David Beckham, will arrange his [Price Is Right] taping schedule so he can attend games.”

Best interview I have seen in a loooooooong time. Everything he says is true. I’m glad soccer has a well spoken advocate! Rad.
Josh… we need to get a beer some time please.
I wonder if Drew Carey knows that Cleveland does now have a Pro soccer team!! USL Division 2 Cleveland City Stars.

They’re have a great innaugural season and I look forward to seeing them play the Columbus Crew on Tuesday. True, the games aren’t televised, but I think there is an Internet Radio broadcast. I can’t get into listening to soccer on the radio, but it’s there.
I saw it like it was a topic because the way david nearly introed the subject…
dgforthree… If cleveland started a MLS team he would be have trouble deciding. It’s bacause he hasn’t any entertainment to go to in LA when he lives there, so thats why he chose MLS, and quite frankly I’ve seen MLS, it’s good, well OK, but it’s not la liga, Premier league, Ehe division, Bundes liga…
I’m so happy he made it clear that the soccer mum ’soccer’ has nothing to do with real soccer/football
this is good
[...] I still think this is true (see: Drew Carey). I also think soccer in the U.S. will benefit from good ownership. [...]
I AM LOOKING FOR THE SHOW THAT YOU HAD ON FANS BUYING AND VOTING FOR COACHES TO GET FIRED
