Poll: Who should take penalty kicks?

Last weekend in our match against Gretna, Benji picked up the ball, walked to the spot, and delivered a weak penalty kick which the Gretna keeper easily saved.

The thing about Benji is this: he’s either phenomenal on the pitch or terrible and/or nonexistent. When he’s “on the jazz” (see: Smith, Hannibal of “The A-Team“) he can score from just about anywhere; but one is never really sure when that might happen. He is volatile, to say the least, and the last person I want taking a crucial PK.

So the question is this: should teams have a “designated taker” of penalty kicks?

It should be decided before the foul ever occurs, and it should be somebody who can take all of the emotion out of the shot and just make solid contact that will be on target.

I always liked the idea that the guy who drew the penalty should take the pk.

Matthew makes a romantic (as in “storybook”, not “lover-ly”) point, but if the idea is to capitalize on a foul and put the ball in the net, then Minor has your answer. I mean, I’m a fullback who, when opportunity dictates, will make a run toward the goal; no matter how many times I may be fouled in the box, you still don’t really want me taking that PK. Unless, perhaps, we have a 3 goal lead with 2 minutes left in the game and it doesn’t matter that my strike goes right to the ‘keeper.
