Can’t agree that putting Beckham for the whole 90 minutes was a smart thing. The second half you could see Beckham moving to the sidelines (he had to with 10 players) and walking most of the time, while players around him would be running to get into position. 10 players on the pitch opens a LOT more, and Beckham didn’t do quite as much running. Check out the third goal, it could have been an easy three on three situation, but Beckham was not giving it his all to get back which led to an open Chivas player. I’ll give the fact that his free-kicks and corners were concerning for the Chivas, but that is what he is paid $250,000,000 to do.

Also, I can’t understand him playing in the central midfield position, he’s always played on the right, and he certainly wouldn’t have to run as much.

I think you’re right. Beckham plays with heart and Donovan plays with ego. Even if it was the wrong thing to do, Bex feels a strong pull to represent his squad. Donovan is afraid of looking bad… proven time and again around the globe. Only now I think he’s afraid of being shown up by his own teammate.

The thing that’s missing from this equation is that it was *stupid* for Beckham to play all those minutes.

Agreed.

Actually, I was going to say there’s a positional aspect to the substitution, but L.A. needed the goals, so that kills that argument.

I rather like the equation, though.

The thing that’s missing from this equation is that it was *stupid* for Beckham to play all those minutes. There’s no reason to attack Landon because he chose not to take a similar risk. Beckham played two games in 30 hours and Landon didn’t, but how many other people who played international games Wednesday played for their club on Thursday?

Plus, I’ll wager that Landon’s flight accommodations were not quite as nice as Mr. Beckham’s.

I will say that Landon was bad enough on Wednesday that he would’ve been far better served by staying home, though.
