On strikers

Agree or disagree?

Here’s a fact, Twellman is 27. Here’s another, he’s scored six goals in 29 international matches… Part of me thinks the suits at the US Soccer Federation so desperately want Twellman to succeed. He’s got everything they need in a poster boy — an alliterative name, goofy smile, blond hair, etc. You know, the guy that can smile and sell cokes. He has the personality that Donovan does not…except he doesn’t have the game. I hate to knock him, since he does work hard, but we’ve all seen enough.

Reminds me a bit of what I said previously about Eddie Johnson. The problem? Brian McBride is retired and we need someone who’ll put the ball in the back of the net. If these guys aren’t going to do the job, who is?

I thought that was why Brian Ching was selected for the 2006 World Cup? :-) I think that selection of Ching over Twellman for that roster spot pretty much shot Twellman’s mentality. He was playing so well in those qualifying games.

Maybe the US-National teams problem is trying to find McBride’s replacement instead of developing a game plan that works with the current crop of players.

Let’s face it, right now this country may not be able to produce players that can score 50 goals during a national team career.

Interesting insight. I don’t know what they could do to make Ching, Twellman or Johnson into scoring machines.

Hey, Landon’s only 15 away from 50… So, you know…there’s that.

“I don’t know what they could do to make Ching, Twellman or Johnson into scoring machines.”

They may never be scoring machines, but the team can at least play to the strengths of the players available. (Good in the air, likes balls over the top, etc.). We don’t have an all-around threat up front. The coach has to figure out a way to tailor the team to work efficiently with what is available.

Or just play Landon as a lone striker. ;-)

Don’t even get me going on Landycakes and his record as the all time leading goal scorer. Take away all of his free kicks, and goals against countries like Bahamas’ and Barbados and then we can start counting goals.

Why not switch up the formation to a 3-3-4 and feature Dempsey, Chinger, and Landycakes up front. Chinger could play in the middle with the other two working the flanks and playing balls into the box. Chinger isn’t many things, but the guy is good in the air.

Bradley as the central mid, will continue to add an element of danger on loose and sloppy stuff around the box.

I think that this set up gives us the speed and power to keep us in games. I think that very quickly Altidore will be able to replace Chinger in that Central striker role, and Adu will replace Donavan on the wing, but that time hasn’t come yet.

Minor,

Please go to the US main page and look at the results for the poll on how many goals Donovan will score in his career.

Seriously, the poll is still there. Good for a laugh.

I did read the poll. What a Joke. I can see another Honda Player of the Year in Landon’s future.

I just wish for once we could see a US team that tried to spread the defense and had some speed and purpose to their play.
