Nike, U.S. Soccer unveil latest in series of jerseys with totally unrelated styles

New

Can we get a little consistency, please? If I flip to a game, I know immediately if Italy or Brazil are playing just by looking at the uniforms. With the U.S., there is no telling what they might be wearing.

Man that’s just plain UGLY

I actually think it looks pretty sharp… but not for playing soccer. It looks more like something the players should wear on a golf outing.

I agree with the golf shirt comment, but I do like it better then some of the previous versions of the team shirt. Is there an away version, because I am pretty sure that if I bought this shirt I would get mustard on it the first time I wore it. We do need a signature color that is prominent in all of the jerseys (see the Dutch).

Well, at first I didn’t like it that much, but then I started loving it and considered getting one. Bottom line is, if I get one now, will they release a totally new different one for 2010? I’d feel stupid…

Of course they’ll release another one two years from now, just before WC 2010. They always do. And yes, you will them look stupid.

When I first saw it, (received the email from U.S. Soccer) I thought, “Oh, that’s the women’s kit. Where’s the mens?” Then I realized that was the mens. After looking at it for a while I realized it looked like something you might get from the Polo store or Ralph Lauren. I mean you gotta be freaking kidding me. This is supposed to represent the Red, White and Blue with pride and even though I want my uniform, (yes, it’s all of our uniforms as they represent us) to be cool, I want it to have a look that says were the U.S. and you have something to be worried about when you play us. Not, “Oh, a round of golf after we get together for lunch and drinks? -or- perhaps we’ll go to the polo ground and watch the ponies for a while.

If you haven’t already seen the link that folks have been passing around since the unveiling of this shambles of a kit, Slate.com had a piece on the disaster U.S. Soccer has created with their uniform by not having any consistency.

Consistency? Please.
England’s consistency consists of a white jersey.
Brazil’s is yellow with blue shorts.
Italy’s is Blue with white.
USA is White with blue. And has been since I began watching the team in 1989. (except for the departure in 1994)
Our shirts are just as consistent as the aforementioned teams. People who don’t want to be looked down on as Eurosnobs like to bitch about ours and say theirs are that much better because they feel safer. It’s bullshit.

Big Z - Are you kidding? Yes, our kits have generally been Red, White, and Blue. But consistent? No. Click that slate link above that bg posted - you’ll see our kits have been nothing close to consistent and you’ll see a number of kits that were red, white/red, etc.

And the funny part is most of the blog posts and news articles I’ve read were a) written by Americans and b) they hated it. This wasn’t some European media outlet trashing the Americans.

Soccer Dad, do you know what a Eurosnob is??

I didn’t say that they’ve been consistently Red White and Blue.

They’ve been consistently *white*.

Yes, I’ve looked at the slate article. It pretty much confirms what I said. He describes the uniforms from 1989 as “vanilla and blue” boring. What’s different between that and an England kit? Substitute black for blue and you’ve got England’s 1989 shirt.

The 1950s one that all the fan-boys wet themselves over and want to bring back? White with a blue sash.

Apart from the 1994 departure (Which I mentioned already) the only awful-looking shirt in that slideshow was the NASL Team America jersey. That is NOT a national team shirt; it’s like the MLS US All-stars vs. World Stars team jersey. Not the same thing.

Our shirts have been as consistent as Englands or Italy’s or Argentinas.

I’m just not buying it.

Big Z - I gotta go with you on this one. They have almost always been white.

I don’t like the design but I don’t care because they’ll have a new jersey for 2010 WC. Some fan probably won the “design our national team jersey contest”. Unfortunately for us, they liked golf more than soccer.

Kinda off topic…does Brazil even have an away jersey color? Is that a perk once you win enough World Cups?

10 Big Z { 02.04.08 at 7:12 pm }

Brazil’s away color is blue.

One week later and this jersey still looks like crap.

13 Brian Quarstad { 02.06.08 at 3:05 pm }

Ahh, look at that Mark, your right. It still does. Surprising yes?

They’re wearing it tonight, right? That ought to scare the bjesus out of those Mexicans.

14 Mark { 02.06.08 at 5:08 pm }

I’m sure they’ll look better under the lights tonight.

15 Brian Quarstad { 02.06.08 at 5:37 pm }

Who, the Mexicans?

16 Sweetooth { 02.06.08 at 8:31 pm }

They’re terrible. Let’s just admit it. I read the Slate piece ages ago and they are right. Let’s just get the white jersey with the sash, either vertical or diagonal, and end it there. Please. Nike is so good usually (they make Brazil’s kit which is mentioned in half the comments) so why can’t they get our own right? It boggles the mind.

17 Mark { 02.08.08 at 11:56 am }

Brian,

Lol. No, not the Mexicans. I meant the jerseys. But the bright lights only helped make the jerseys look even worse.

A shirt like that should have a crocodile on it, not a national crest.
