Foto Friday (special edition)

Monday seems as good a time as any to run a special edition of Foto Friday

Reuters recently unveiled it’s Pictures of the Year 2007. Included in the bunch is this beauty of Thierry Henry during his Arsenal days:

You remember Henry, right? He played for Arsenal before they were good. You remember David Bentley, right? He always looks like that.

Foto Friday: cold goal

Winter has officially arrived here in the northland. We’re expecting a half foot of snow this weekend and temperatures are in the single digits.

Every season, when this kind of weather descends, I recall playing one of my college games in about a foot of snow. Typically, though, this is the time of year that we Minnesotans move inside to play.

Otherwise, we’d be looking at something like this:

Foto Friday: Stadium fire

Every now and then, as I search for Foto Friday candidates, I get a rare treat. This is one of those. Make sure to read the excerpt of the photographers description, then click the picture for the rest.

Photographer: Floyd Nello

Excerpt of photographer’s description:

I was a kid living on nearby Fishponds Road at the time, and on the following Sunday morning (August 17th) was outside playing with some friends when I could smell burning and can remember thinking that it was odd for someone to be having a bonfire on a Sunday morning. Shortly afterwards, news broke of a fire at Eastville Stadium. My Father and I went straight down there to find the South Stand had been gutted by fire and he took a few photos, including this one taken from the Tote End…

The fire was the beginning of the end for Rovers at Eastville, and although they signed a new five year lease with Bristol Stadium Company in 1982, they left the ground in June 1986 to ground-share with non-league Bath City. Rovers could no longer afford the spiralling rent at Eastville and the move to Bath basically saved the club.

Foto Friday: Sand keeper

The title of this photo is “Die Angst des Torwarts beim Elfmeter.” According to Google’s translator that’s German for “The fear of the goalie in the penalty.” According to the photographer, it means “The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick.” Obviously not perfect translations but you get the idea.

From what I gather, there were a lot of these sand sculptures in Berlin during the 2006 World Cup.
