For sale: Beckham’s leftovers

david beckhamNo, Posh is not for sale.

The Galaxy have been on a Harlem Globetrotters tour of the world and, while the team was in New Zealand to play the vaunted Wellington Phoenix, David Beckham stopped for a bite to eat at a local chicken restaurant.

It seems that Mr. Beckham left behind a half-eaten corn cob, a tiny bit of Coke (that’s Coca-Cola, people; again—this has nothing to do with Posh) and one lonely french fry. You know what’s coming next, right?

Fans of football superstar David Beckham are cashing in on his recent visit to New Zealand by trying to sell his food scraps and dirty dishes on the Internet. Link

In case you’re in the market for some chewed-up corn, a little saliva with a splash of Coke or a dusty french fry, here are the auctions, from New Zealand’s auction site, Trade Me:

Happy bidding, you crazy kids!

Fantasy Roundup: The queen is dead

Well, not dead, exactly; she’s just in second place by 20 points or so, due to an atrocious week and an amazing couple of weeks from RedCard_10, managed by Denis Underwood.

I’d also like to note that of the 100,000+ leagues, the ThroughBall.com fantasy league is the 786th best. Very impressive, folks–keep up the good work!

Foto Friday: cold goal

Winter has officially arrived here in the northland. We’re expecting a half foot of snow this weekend and temperatures are in the single digits.

Every season, when this kind of weather descends, I recall playing one of my college games in about a foot of snow. Typically, though, this is the time of year that we Minnesotans move inside to play.

Otherwise, we’d be looking at something like this:

From the New York Times Archives: The birth of Major League Soccer

The From the New York Times feature is one of my favorite things. By combing through the archives of the New York Times, we can uncover some really neat soccer history gems.

So far, we’ve read a few articles from the early 20th century and even one from the late 1800s. But, the New York Times archives can teach us about recent history too.

Take for instance, this article from 1993 that describes, in part, the conception of Major League Soccer.

This was not a very auspicious beginning for the Major Soccer League, a collectivist 12-team professional league that may be attempted in April 1995. According to the plan, investors would put money into the league rather than in individual teams, in an attempt to control salaries.

I got a kick out of reading this and, as a special bonus, I learned about the infamous “banning” of Pele during the 1994 World Cup.

Sell your soul for the national team

the-devil.jpgThe Far Post (see infamous interview here) asked an intriguing question yesterday: What would you trade for the U.S. Men’s National Team to win the World Cup in your lifetime?

I really don’t even know how to answer it. As I commented there, I actually considered letting Mexico with every other World Cup in my lifetime but, man, that’d be rough.

What say you?
